Did you know that about 700 HAAM musicians and DJs also teach music? Teaching music is not only a source of income but also vital for the longevity of the music community. Music education extends beyond learning instruments or reading sheet music; it enriches culture, develops cognition, and builds communities across generations.

Formal music education in schools provides a foundation, but working musicians who teach bring their experience and passion to their communities. These artist-educators bridge theory and practice, offering students technical instruction and real-world insights into living a musical life. They inspire students and nurture future artists, serving as cultural anchors by preserving traditions, fostering innovation, and ensuring the community remains vibrant.

This week, HAAM celebrates musician Joshua Koons—a musician, songwriter, and teacher. In an interview with HAAM, Josh shared his experiences with HAAM, Austin's music scene, and teaching. "And some bass," he added when asked about playing guitar. "I'm a songwriter and teach music too."

Josh has been teaching for over 20 years with around 20 students currently. He mentioned having students who have joined bands or become band leaders: "I have one kid now who's the band leader of a church." The longest he has taught one student is 14 years.

Teaching offers unique challenges and rewards. Josh noted that seeing the musician's life from a teacher's perspective makes him appreciate the hard work involved: "Somebody had to work really hard for the most part."

Josh moved to Austin in 2000 due to its numerous venues: "I've played several places over all these years I've been in town." He acknowledged Austin's reputation as a Music City but emphasized its challenges: "Everybody thinks that Austin's a great place to be a musician...it's really difficult."

Recently featured on KOOP radio's show “The Singer and the Songwriter,” Josh appreciated being able to play freely: "He was like...we're just going to let you go and just play."

Josh learned about HAAM from Ethan Azarian before moving to Austin. As a member since then, he praised HAAM’s support with dental care: "That's really helpful because that's hundreds...of dollars for dental things." He recounted how HAAM helped reduce his hospital bill significantly after an appendectomy.

Despite some health issues like torn muscles or finger nodules from playing instruments—common occupational hazards—HAAM has provided support: "HAAM always helps out with the co-pay...helps out with checks."
