The Pease Park Conservancy has announced that five Cedar Elm trees in Kingsbury Commons are scheduled for removal. The trees, which have shown significant limb loss and canopy damage, now pose a risk to visitors and will be taken down. Despite some parts remaining alive, the decision comes after evaluations by arborists revealed distress from age, droughts, and freezes.
An arborist inspection was prompted when one tree near restrooms dropped a large branch at night. Although previous efforts included removing weight from canopies and maintaining hydration, the trees' conditions necessitate their removal.
Alicia, Pease Park Conservancy’s Horticulture Coordinator, noted ongoing efforts with the City of Austin to care for trees of various life stages in the park. She emphasized the goal of replicating natural forest diversity within Pease Park's urban environment. New trees will be planted during winter to maintain biodiversity across the park's 84 acres.
The removal process is scheduled for October 14 and 15 near the playground and other amenities in Kingsbury Commons. Temporary closures will occur on these dates as PARD Forestry carries out the work.
