The City of Austin is inviting public input on proposed improvements for Congress Avenue, specifically between Cesar Chavez Street and 11th Street. This initiative includes the creation of a plaza north of Seventh Street.

The Congress Avenue Urban Design Initiative (CAUDI) aims to transform Congress Avenue into a more pedestrian-friendly area with a distinct identity. The plan involves converting blocks between Seventh Street and 11th Street into public plazas, aligning with community feedback gathered through ongoing public engagement.

Vehicular access would be restricted north of Seventh Street, though cross traffic will continue on adjacent streets. Current funding allows for the full reconstruction of blocks between Ninth and 11th Streets, while blocks from Seventh to Ninth Streets will receive interim improvements pending future investment.

The first phase of CAUDI is estimated at $22 million, funded primarily by the 2020 Austin Mobility Bond. Additional improvements are planned for the section between Cesar Chavez Street and Seventh Street, including enhanced bikeways and pedestrian spaces. These efforts also draw funding from the same bond.

This initiative seeks to revitalize Congress Avenue as Austin’s "Main Street," inspired by the transformation of the Texas Capitol Mall. It aims to create a vibrant space that reflects Austin's character.

Residents can provide feedback via a Virtual Open House until November 24, 2024. This feedback will help align changes with community needs and goals outlined in the Vision Plan. Two in-person events are scheduled for October 22 and October 26 at Downtown Austin Space Activation for further engagement.
