The Austin City Council has approved updates and new initiatives to support local business growth, affordable commercial spaces, and the preservation of cultural districts. These efforts include updates to the Business Expansion Program and the introduction of two new initiatives: the Place-Based Enhancement Program and the Economic and Cultural District Framework Policy. These initiatives aim to modernize the city’s approach to fostering economic growth, preserving cultural identity, and supporting equitable access to commercial spaces and resources.

The updated and new initiatives respond to the evolving needs of Austin’s business and creative sectors, making the programs more relevant to current economic conditions while also expanding support for historically underserved communities.

"These initiatives are a bold step forward in ensuring that Austin’s growth is both inclusive and sustainable,” explains Sylnovia Holt-Rabb, Director of the Economic Development Department. “By empowering local businesses and preserving our cultural districts, we are building a city where innovation and creativity thrive hand in hand with community and equity. This is about shaping a future where every Austinite has the opportunity to succeed."

The updates are part of the Economic Development Department’s mission to advance inclusive economic opportunities, as well as the efforts of its Global Business Expansion Division, which works to attract new investments and create jobs across the city. Together, these initiatives ensure Austin remains a competitive destination for businesses while preserving its cultural identity and supporting community-based economic development.
