The City of Austin Office of Homeland Security and Emergency Management (HSEM) is organizing an emergency preparedness classroom training. This two-hour session is developed in collaboration with Austin Watershed Protection, Austin Fire Department, Austin-Travis County Emergency Medical Services, Ascension Seton, and Go Austin/Vamos Austin (GAVA).
Registration is required for the event. Complimentary pizza and beverages will be provided for attendees. Participants are encouraged to RSVP to secure their spot and assist in planning.
The training is free and open to all community members, regardless of prior knowledge. Participants will receive guidance on the four steps of emergency preparedness: creating a plan, building an emergency kit, knowing your neighbors, and staying informed. The course aims to equip attendees with strategies to prepare their households and communities for various potential hazards. As part of HSEM’s all-hazards approach, this session will focus on flood safety. Flooding is a significant hazard in Central Texas, and this course aims to help community members stay safe during flood season. The course will also cover fire prevention basics for the home and include a CPR demonstration.
Upon completing the course, participants will receive an emergency preparedness starter kit and a NOAA weather radio. Interpreters will be available in both Spanish and American Sign Language, with additional language support provided upon request. For special accommodations, contact 3-1-1 or (512) 974-2000 no later than five days before the event.
