Superintendent Matias Segura | Austin Independent School District, TX

UpClose participants recently embarked on an immersive tour of the Austin Independent School District (AISD), gaining insight into the district's commitment to serving its diverse student population. The tour showcased facilities that prioritize modern instruction, cultural inclusivity, and student safety.

During the tour, Karla Guevara expressed surprise at the specialized training of AISD police officers in mental health de-escalation for children. She remarked, "I never knew Austin ISD police is specially trained in mental health de-escalation that focuses on children."

Michelle Hutson-Crawford, impressed by the facilities, shared her pride in being associated with AISD, stating, "I feel really proud to call Austin ISD my home after seeing this facility."

Business owner Arturo Ordoñez was inspired to offer paid job opportunities to AISD students, affirming, "I’m a business owner and I will offer paid jobs to these students. Sign me in."

The tour commenced at the Nelson Bus Terminal, where participants learned about the transportation team's vital role in safely transporting 20,000 students daily.

The group then visited the former Rosedale School campus, now repurposed for AISD Police officers' training from the entire region. The campus, previously vacant, is undergoing transformation into a facility where students with significant disabilities will be given priority.

The tour culminated at a modernized AISD school designed to support students with disabilities, including those who are medically fragile. The school features a state-of-the-art playground, a music lab, a medical wing, and a program preparing students over 18 for employment and independent living.
