The Austin ISD police department has unveiled its first motorcycle police unit, a move aimed at significantly improving school safety and community involvement.

"With the support of our board, our Austin ISD Police force will more than double in size, allowing us the flexibility with scheduling and supporting special events," said Wayne Sneed, Austin ISD police chief.

The department's decision to establish the motorcycle unit comes in response to the introduction of Texas House Bill 3 last year, which mandated certain measures to ensure compliance with state regulations and enhance safety across all campuses.

The department is now focused on recruiting 70 community-oriented officers who are passionate about building relationships with students and safeguarding the community.

Equipped with motorcycles, these officers will have the ability to patrol multiple campuses efficiently and provide swift assistance as needed.

This initiative underscores the commitment of the Austin ISD police department to adapt to evolving safety needs and engage more closely with the community.
