The Austin Police Department (APD) Cold Case Unit has made a significant breakthrough in the investigation of the 1994 murder of Bert Allen Mann. After almost three decades of relentless pursuit of justice, detectives have identified a suspect in connection to the case.

On May 12, 1994, Mann was tragically found with fatal stab wounds in the kitchen of his residence on Star Grass Circle. It appeared that the suspect had forced entry into Mann's home through a rear sliding glass door. Mann discovered the intruder upon his return from work, leading to a struggle near the front door which ultimately resulted in his untimely death.

For years, the investigation into Mann's murder produced numerous leads and persons of interest. However, it wasn't until 2005 that a breakthrough occurred. A blood stain found at the crime scene was tested for DNA, revealing an unidentified male profile. Despite entering the profile into the Combined DNA Index System (CODIS), no match was found at the time.

In March 2023, the unknown DNA profile was sent to Bode Technology for Forensic Genetic Genealogy. After months of analysis, a possible suspect was identified, someone previously unknown to the investigation. On September 8, 2023, APD detectives executed a DNA search warrant to compare the suspect's DNA with the DNA found inside Mann's residence.

Tragically, the suspect, Kenneth Robbins, was found deceased inside his work truck in Weatherford, Texas, on September 13, 2023. Autopsy results confirmed that Robbins had taken his own life. The DNA from Robbins conclusively matched the DNA left at the crime scene, providing the long-awaited connection between the suspect and the murder of Bert Allen Mann.

The dedication of the APD Cold Case Unit and the collaborative efforts of over 20 detectives, as well as non-sworn employees such as crime scene units, latent print examiners, and DNA Case Management employees, have played a crucial role in the progression and resolution of this case.

Bert Allen Mann is survived by his widow and sister, who have waited patiently for justice to be served.
