New Hope Animal Rescue (NHAR) in Austin, TX, is seeking a forever home for Kona, a friendly, four-year-old male yellow Labrador retriever mix, who is currently available for adoption.
“Kona is a very affectionate, well-behaved pup,” Kelley Rice, director of New Hope Animal Rescue, told the Austin Journal. “He’s always down for an adventure, but while he is active and playful, he adores belly rubs and snuggles with his human and thrives on (proper) human attention.”
Kona loves to play fetch, is house-trained and sleeps soundly in his crate at night, according to his bio on the rescue's website. While he knows some basic commands, he is eager to learn and "is looking forward to a companion who will continue teaching him," the biography read. Kona likes to spend time in his crate and has never been destructive when not left in his crate, the bio says.

Rice said Kona would do great with an active owner who enjoys long walks, jogs, or hikes, and who is willing to spend some time playing fetch.
“Kona would do best with a confident, patient adopter who is willing to put in some training time and set Kona up for success,” Rice said. “Someone willing to pay attention to and understand his needs and then work to fulfill them. It might take some emotional commitment, but he’s well worth it.”
Kona is good with kids, as he currently lives with a toddler. He has made many dog friends, but Rice said he would do best as an only dog. “Kona is a type of dog that will do best with more discipline than coddling, but he is a fantastic, fun and loving dog that is sure to make a great life companion for anyone,” his bio stated.
Without a DNA test, NHAR can only guess the exact breed of its dogs, but Kona’s physical characteristics suggest he is a yellow Labrador mix. America's most popular breed, yellow Labs are known to be friendly, outgoing, intelligent, enthusiastic and loyal, NHAR reported. While they can be very fun to own, they need their fair share of stimulation to prevent them from becoming bored, which could result in unwanted behaviors. A bored Lab can form bad habits and become hyperactive or destructive or begin resource guarding. But with proper stimulation and interaction from their owners, this breed is very easy to please.

NHAR is a breed-inclusive dog and cat rescue, according to the website, striving to save animals that are at risk of being killed at shelters in the Greater Austin area and beyond. NHAR relies heavily on foster parent volunteers as well as donations.
