The City of Austin is usually feted as one of the best live music scenes in the U.S., but a few know that it’s also home to one of the only two all-women-run boxing gyms in the country in Austin Women’s Boxing Club, per a report from Austin NBC affiliate KXAN.
According to the station, the sports-related distinction is a source of pride to local trainer and amateur fighter Alex Plichta.
Plichta told KXAN that the club has done more for her in and out of the ring.
“This place definitely gives me confidence, not just in boxing but as a person in general,” she said, according to the station.
The women who train at Austin Women’s Boxing Club share Plichta’s sentiments as well, KXAN reported.
Per the report, Katie Gleason calls the sport her priority.
“I feel equally prioritized and supported in this environment,” Gleason told KXAN.
As it gives women a place to get in shape, boost their confidence and form a tight-knit community, the station reported, the Austin Women’s Boxing Club prides itself in dispelling stereotypes about women in the sport.
According to the gym’s website, the USA Boxing certified coaches teach women who have never donned boxing gloves before to those preparing for local club competitions.
“It’s the ideal mix: Professional, knowledgeable and authentic boxing training in an all women environment,” the website says.
Austin Women’s Boxing Club is located at 2919 Menchaca Rd., Ste. 210 in Austin.
