Austin FC signed Ecuadorian winger Washington Corozo on a six-month loan on Wednesday, according to a franchise-issued press release and Austin ABC affiliate KVUE.
The 23-year-old Corozo will join Verde by way of Club Sporting Cristal S.A. of Peru, per the release. KVUE reported that the loan includes a transfer option.
According to the release, Corozo suited up for Club Universidad Nacional, A.C. (UNAM) in Mexico on a loan during the 2021-2022 season, as well as saw action in the 2022 Confederation of North, Central America and Caribbean Association Football (CONCACAF) Champions League Final.
“We’re delighted to welcome Washington to Austin,” Verde sporting director Claudio Reyna said, per the release. “We look at every transfer window as an opportunity to improve the squad, and feel that Washington’s dynamic skill set and speed in wide areas will do just that.”
The club welcomed the 5-foot-11 winger in a Spanish-language tweet.
During Corozo’s stint with UNAM, the release said, he tallied eight goals in 44 appearances spanning all competitions.
According to the release, his professional career began with the Ecuadorian club Independiente del Valle whom he helped guide to a 2019 Copa Sudamericana triumph.
Corozo’s time with Cristal included a Peruvian Liga 1 championship, the release said.
Corozo expressed excitement about joining his first Major League Soccer (MLS) team.
“Austin FC is an ambitious club, in a great city, with a terrific fanbase,” he said in the release. “I want to thank Claudio Reyna and [head coach] Josh Wolff for this opportunity, as well as my agent, and look forward to being a part of the club. I’ll give everything I have for Austin FC and can’t wait to step out under the lights at Q2 Stadium.”
