A Roman Catholic parish in the Hill Country community of Hostyn was destroyed by a fire Thursday, Austin-based media outlets reported.
Austin FOX affiliate KTBC reported that a parishioner arrived at Queen of the Holy Rosary Catholic Church to prepare for 7 a.m. mass that morning when an "explosion occurred."
"The Father and another parishioner got her out," Fayette County Sheriff's Office (FCSO) Chief Deputy Randy Noviskie said, according to the station.
Fire departments representing the cities of La Grange, Schulenberg, Muldoon and Fayetteville responded to the incident, the station reported.
Noviskie told KTBC that when firefighters arrived at the church, the building was fully engulfed and debris was widespread.
The woman who was helped out of the church was taken to Dell-Seton Medical Center in Austin where staff treated her for burns, per the station.
The parish website explained that Queen of the Holy Rosary was established in 1869, and the building that just burned down was built in 1966, Austin ABC affiliate KVUE reported.
It wasn't the first time it experienced a fire as the second church building that was built in 1888 was consumed by a blaze in 1907, according to the parish.
Diana Kallus, who has attended mass at Queen of the Holy Rosary for 54 years, told KVUE that the church is a big part of her family.
"It's sentimental," Kallus said, per the station. "Our children were married here, baptized our grandchildren here, its a sad day but we will be OK."
According to Queen of the Holy Rosary's Facebook page, Reverend Felix Twumasi requested prayers for the parishioner who was pulled out of the inferno.
The church also posted that its weekend masses will be held in its parish hall for the foreseeable future while Saints Peter & Paul Catholic Church will hold its weekday services this week.
