Texas ranked ninth among the 50 states in a new WalletHub study that examines the general stress level of each state’s residents based on factors such as average hours worked per week and state bankruptcy rates.
The Lone Star State scored 53.38 out of 100 in the ranking, with higher scores equating to greater stress. In comparison, No. 1 Louisiana scored 61.38 in the analysis that compared states over four dimensions: Work-related stress, financial stress, family-related stress and stress related to health and safety.
Texas ranked second in the work-stress category, 32nd for financial stress, fourth for family-related stress and 14th for stress based on health and safety issues.
In addition, Texas was ranked the third-highest in the comparison of average hours worked per week in each state. Other categories measured include the share of adults getting adequate sleep, average commute times and separation and divorce rates.
About a third of Americans at times felt so stressed during the coronavirus pandemic that it affected their ability to make basic decisions, the study’s authors said.
