Gov. Greg Abbott has appealed for Texans to offer prayers for a Bastrop County Sheriff's deputy who is recovering from gunshot wounds.

CBS Austin reported that Deputy Sawyer Wilson was shot at multiple times at a gas station on the night of March 13, sustaining injuries to his chest and forearm.

The alleged shooter has since been apprehended, according to the station.

"Our hearts are with Deputy Sawyer Wilson as he recovers from injuries sustained while protecting his fellow Texans in Bastrop County," the governor said in a press release issued by his office. "Selfless heroes like Deputy Wilson put their lives at risk every day to serve their communities, and the State of Texas is ready to provide all resources necessary to bring the perpetrator to justice. I ask that all Texans join the first lady and me in lifting up Deputy Wilson and his family in prayer as he begins his journey to recovery."

Wilson was among the Bastrop County Sheriff's Office (BCSO) units that responded to alleged criminal mischief at State Highway 95 and LBA Drive.

According to CBS Austin, Wilson confronted the suspect – identified by authorities as 33-year-old Michael Stark – at the LBA Market.

Upon learning Stark committed a parole violation, Wilson sought to engage him further when the suspect opened fire on him three times.

Wilson told the station that his protective vest saved his life.

Physicians expect the deputy to make a full recovery.

CBS Austin reported that Stark was arrested the next day after the shooting.

Before the incident, he had reportedly been arrested more than 20 times.

Bastrop County is about 40 miles southwest of Austin.
