With two state championships and a lengthy winning streak under her belt, Cedar Park Lady Timberwolves junior guard Gisella Maul is writing her legacy as one of the best girls basketball players to ever take the court in Central Texas.
The 5-foot-10-inch floor general added to that legacy by being named the 2021-22 Gatorade Texas Girls Basketball Player of the Year, according to Austin ABC affiliate KVUE.
Maul is the first player in the histories of Cedar Park and the Leander Independent School District to earn the accolade.
She's now a finalist for the Gatorade National Girls Basketball Player of the Year, which will be announced later this month, FOX7 reported.
"Gisella Maul is the most unstoppable player we watched or played against," Marble Falls girls basketball coach John Berkman said in a press release issued by the Gatorade Basketball Player of the Year program. "She can create her own scoring opportunities, she can shoot it from outside anywhere she wants and finishes at the goal. She is a fantastic player."
Maul was instrumental in helping the Lady Timberwolves compile a 36-0 record, reel off 61 consecutive victories, and of course, capture back-to-back Class 5A crowns.
During the 2021-2022 season, she averaged 25.6 points, 8.2 rebounds, 3.1 assists and 2.9 steals per game through 36 contests, FOX7 reported.
Maul was named the MVP of the 2021 Class 5A state title game and to the First Team All-State that same year.
HoopGurlz ranked her No. 45 in the nation among Class of 2023 recruits.
According to the release, Maul maintains a weighted 4.33 GPA and volunteered by making baked goods for first responders and medical facilities and logging time at a nursing home.
She hasn't committed to any university or college for the next step in her academic and athletic careers.
