Texas ranked in the bottom 10 states in a new WalletHub study that examines how women-friendly the 50 states are, based on criteria such as median earnings for working women, the female homicide rate and availability of preventative health care.
The Lone Star State scored 42.52 out of 100 in the ranking, putting Texas in 44th place in the study. In comparison, No. 1 Massachusetts scored 74.61 in the analysis that compared states over two primary dimensions: Women’s economic and social well-being and women’s health care and safety.
Texas ranked 43rd in the well-being category and 38th for health care and safety. In addition, Texas had the highest female uninsured rate in the nation.
The study’s authors found that women fared poorly nationwide in a number of areas. Almost two-thirds of people making the minimum wage are women, according to the report. And in Congress, women make up around one-quarter of elected officials, even though they comprise 51% of the nation’s population.
In addition, working women suffered the worst effects of burnout during the coronavirus pandemic, WalletHub reported.
