Goals were hard to come by for Austin FC during their inaugural season in 2021.
Fast forward to Sunday (March 6), and it’s easy to assume that MLS’s youngest franchise has the league's best attack at the dawn of its sophomore year.
For the second consecutive match, Verde tallied five goals on the way to a 5-1 win, this time at Inter Miami’s expense, Austin affiliate KXAN reported.
"[Five] goals at Q2 Stadium .... again!" Austin FC's official Twitter account announced postgame. "That's how we do it in Austin."
Twenty-two minutes had gone by when forward Sebastian Driussi turned a give from midfielder Diego Fagúndez into Austin FC's first goal of the afternoon, KXAN reported.
That wouldn't be the last time Driussi, a 2021 designated player, would get the ball to sail under the crossbar as he drilled Verde's third goal at the 51-minute mark.
Center-back Julio Cascante's header in between the Driussi scores was Austin FC's second goal.
Veteran winger Ethan Finlay, who inked a two-year deal with Verde late last year, pumped two goals to wrap the game up for Austin FC, which essentially became the first MLS team to score five goals in back-to-back games to start a season, KXAN reported.
According to the station, the match was Fagúndez's 300th as an MLS player for which he was honored pregame.
Verde and the Los Angeles Galaxy currently share the top spot in the Western Conference standings.
Just like the start of its first season, Austin FC is in the midst of a two-game winning streak, which it'll try to extend as visitors of the Portland Timbers on March 12.
