Westlake High School continued its dominance with its 34th straight win to claim the district title with a blowout 63-21 win last week over Lake Travis, which just so happens to also be the last team to beat the Chaparrals.

Westlake has a record of 10-0 and 7-0 in the district as the regular season comes to a close, which put the team as the No. 1 seed in Division 2 for 26-6A. Lake Travis fell to 8-2 and 6-1 in its district, and is the top Division 1 seed.

“On to Round 1,” tweeted Westlake quarterback Cade Klubnik who led the scoring charge with five touchdowns.

The Chaparrals scored just minutes into the game and led 14-0 early, KXAN reported, and Westlake never looked back with a 42-14 lead at the half.

Klubnik, who is reportedly going to Clemson next season, has been battling a non-throwing shoulder injury and KXAN reported that he missed the past three games. While it was certainly good to have the starting quarterback on the field for Westlake, the team did well during his time on the sideline outscoring opponents 210-9, according to MaxPreps.com.

MaxPreps.com reported that he threw for three touchdowns and rushed for two more, while amassing 250 total yards in the win.

“Klubnik is clicking in his first game back,” Andrew Schnitker of KXAN wrote in his report of the game.

Sophomore running back Jack Kayser had 170 yards rushing on 21 carries. He also caught two passes for 89 yards and scored a pair of touchdowns.

Westlake is the No. 1 team in the state and has won two straight titles to go along with their huge winning streak. The streak has given the team national headlines and MaxPreps has the Chaparrals as the No. 3 team in the country. The top two are Mater Dei, based in California, and Florida’s IMG Academy.

Overall, KXAN reported that the Chaparrals have outscored district opponents 422-36 with three shutouts during the team’s winning streak the past two years.

The last time the Chaparrals lost was at the end of 2019 to rival Lake Travis in a tight 26-25 game. The teams did not face off last year because the game was cancelled due to COVID-19.
