Austin comes in 111th in new safety ranking for largest U.S. cities

Austin finished in the bottom half of a new WalletHub ranking of U.S. cities based on their residents’ physical security, financial stability and issues affecting public health. 

The analysis by the personal-finance website placed Austin 111th among 182 cities ranked. The city received an overall score of 71.65 on a 100-point scale.

In the category of “Home and Community Safety,” which includes rates for COVID-19 cases and deaths, as well as homicides and assaults, Austin was ranked 134th. In terms of natural-disaster risk, the city finished 98th. And Austin came in 29th in the category of “Financial Safety,” which includes unemployment and poverty rates.

The WalletHub study ranked cities based on 44 key indicators, including coronavirus deaths per capita in the previous week, assaults per capita, risks of terrorist attacks and the quality of local roads and highways.
