The Northern Arizona Lumberjacks won their first game of the season Sept. 18, led by former Westwood High School quarterback R.J. Martinez.

The Lumberjacks defeated the Arizona Wildcats 21-19 after Martinez threw a nine-yard touchdown pass to received Hendrix Johnson, KXAN reported. That put the Lumberjacks ahead 21-13 with 7:53 remaining in the fourth quarter. The Lumberjacks held on to the lead, blocking a two-point conversion attempt by Arizona after it scored a touchdown with two minutes left in the game.

"First college win as a true freshman," the quarterback's mother, Jennifer Martinez tweeted. "So proud and excited for you son!"

It was Northern Arizona's first win against Arizona since 1932, KXAN reported.

In 2019, Martinez broke the Texas high school football record for most pass attempts during a game in 2019, the station reported. That record was previously held by Johnny Manziel.

Martinez was a junior when he broke Manziel's record. He also had 50 completions in a game, which tied the state record, the story said.

In the Arizona game, Martinez completed 11 passes for 88 yards and had 43 yards rushing on six carries, KXVAN reported.
