A 28-story residential tower in Austin's Museum District that will be just blocks north of the State Capitol recently broke ground for construction.

The project will also be in the vicinity of the Texas Mall, the Medical District, the Central Business District, Blanton Museum of Art, The University of Texas at Austin and Judge’s Hill.

The Linden, a collection of mixed-use luxury residences in downtown, broke ground on Sept. 15 at 313 W. 17th St. after the razing of the former William Gammon Insurance building.

The groundbreaking comes after a recent Rhode Partners addition to Austin's skyline, The Independent, which is the tallest building in the city at 685 feet.

The vertical tower is expected to open in late summer 2023 with a unit mix of 117 one- to three-bedroom units and several two-story penthouses.

The development will also have street-level amenities that include a lap pool, and an adjacent bar, a fitness center with a sauna, outdoor dining and lounge areas, and a public art gallery set to feature work from both local and international artists on a rotating basis.

The project team consists of architect Rhode Partners, developer Reger Holdings and contractor Bartlett Cocke.

Rhode Founding Director Ben Rhode said in a statement, “We are honored to play a valuable role in shaping Austin's burgeoning Museum District with our design for The Linden. Not only will the building interact with and make a positive contribution to the area, particularly at the street level, but it will also serve as an important hallmark for vibrant urban life in Austin."
