Texas head coach Steve Sarkisian on Aug. 29 named Lake Travis alum Hudson Card the Longhorns' starting quarterback.
Card getting the nod settles – for the time being at least – the battle under center between the redshirt freshman and junior Casey Thompson.
The 6-foot-2-inch, 200-pound Card beat out Thompson for the coveted job in fall camp.
"Hudson's a very talented young man. He's got great work ethic, he really tries to operate the way we want to operate,” Sarkissian told ESPN. "As I told Casey, it's really not a knock on Casey. Both guys really started to perform very well after that first scrimmage, and it was a tough call."
However, it remains to be seen if Card is the Texas’s permanent starter.
Sarkissian kept mum on the subject, ESPN noted.
Texas HS Football reported that Card played in two games for the Longhorns last year.
In his collegiate debut against UTEP, Card threw a pass and ran for eight yards.
He also appeared toward the end of the Valero Alamo Bowl – a 55-23 victory – in which he tossed for five yards and jogged for three.
As the field general for Lake Travis, he was considered the nation's third-best dual-threat signal-caller.
On the strength of a prep career line that included over 6,000 passing yards, Card guided the Cavaliers to two trips to state
Texas HS Football reported that Card succeeds Texas’s second all-time leader in passing yards and passing touchdowns, Sam Ehlinger, who is now with the Indianapolis Colts.
As of this writing, Card was preparing for the 21st-ranked Longhorns’ 2021 debut against the Louisiana Ragin’ Cajuns.
