Regents School of Austin senior quarterback Drew Dickey may have a state championship and a pledge to Vanderbilt, but don't count on him to rest on his laurels.
Spectrum News 1 reported that Dickey guided the Knights to a thrilling 26-20 victory over Dallas Christian in the 2020 TAPPS Division II championship game and, now a senior, is now going into his final season with Regents.
"Being the quarterback, you just are that leader, so you have to find the way to best relate to your guys," Dickey told Spectrum News.
The Regents football team has been like a second home to Dickey and his older brothers before him. But only Dickey can say that he has went from rooting for the Knights in the stands to leading them to a state title.
"I came to every game, imagining what it's going to be like to play under the lights on Friday night," Dickey told Spectrum News. "It’s all just kind of crazy and surreal how fast it moves."
A three-star pro-style signal-caller, Dickey pledged with the Commodores shortly after they reached out to him with an offer, Vandy247 reported.
"The vision that they gave me of the future of this program gave me a whole lot of assurance for when I got that offer last Friday," Dickey told Vandy247. "I'm ready. I've always been a guy who kind of likes to surprise people, and I think it's gonna be awesome when we build this program from the ground up and we're able to establish Vanderbilt as a great football school as well in the SEC. Their vision and everything, they've promised they're gonna make it happen and I have full confidence in this staff and I believe in them."
Dickey said that he was comfortable committing to Vanderbilt after building a relationship with coach Joey Lynch over the last two months.
Standing at 6 foot 1 inch and weighting 204 pounds, Dickey threw for 1,861 yards and 25 touchdowns and completed 70% of his passes in 2020. He is also very mobile and ran for 741 yards for 14 scores.
"From Day 1 talking to the coaches when they started recruiting me, they told me that my play style was gonna be a perfect fit for them," Dickey told Vandy247. "Everything that they're trying to do in this offense, I think I'm gonna mold really well into that. My ability to throw with great precision and accuracy I think is gonna fit into this new offense."
