'Texas breeds innovation': Abbott congratulations Funk, Bezos on voyage Blue Origin space flight

The Blue Origin voyage space mission broke two records in one trip.

The spaceship was launched from Van Horn, Tex., and aboard was 82-year-old aviator Wally Funk, making her the oldest human in history to travel to space.

"Texas breeds innovation," said Gov. Greg Abbott on Twitter when the ship launched July 20.

"Congratulations @BlueOrigin and Texas' own Wally Funk on their historic first human spaceflight — launched right here in the Lone Star State!"

According to Axios, Funk has aspired to go to space for 60 years. Despite passing numerous exams as part of the Women in Space Program, she never had the opportunity since the federal government did away with the program.

The 82-year-old has been flying since her late teens. While most teens made good use of their driver's licenses, Funk took serious advantage of her flying license, even sneaking away from a party to take to the skies.

Funk was joined by billionaire Jeff Bezos, Bezos' brother Mark, and the person who broke the record at the opposite end of the spectrum as Funk, 18-year-old Dutch teenager Oliver Daemen.

Blue Origin is a space company owned by Bezos, who is also best known for Amazon.

According to CNBC, Bezos responded to speculation that his mission to bridge the gap to space is an attempt to flee the planet.

"This is not about escaping Earth. This is the only good planet in the solar system," he said. "We have to take care of it."
