The state has ended its legal inquiry into the Austin Independent School District’s alleged violation of Texas law regarding prohibited concepts, including Critical Race Theory (CRT). The investigation, which began in May 2025, was closed without any admission of wrongdoing by the district.

“Austin ISD has maintained since the beginning that we have not violated this law and that our district policy is in compliance, specifically concerning the teaching of ‘Critical Race Theory’ in our schools,” said Superintendent Matias Segura.

In February 2022, Austin ISD provided resources and guidance to its leaders to educate campus staff about the requirements of the relevant state law. The district says it will continue this practice by reminding principals and staff of their obligations under the Texas Education Code and directing compliance inquiries to a designated administrator.

Board President Lynn Boswell commented on the impact of the lawsuit: “This lawsuit consumed valuable time and public funds. This resolution allows us to focus our resources on our core mission: providing a high-quality public school education for every student in our district,” she said. “Austin ISD deeply values its teachers and staff as professionals. We trust each of them to follow state law and district policies while creating joyful learning environments, supporting every child as an individual and expanding opportunities for our students.”

Austin ISD states it remains committed to upholding both state law and district policy while supporting educators in their daily work. District leadership emphasized their dedication to maintaining high standards for students and educators across the community.
