Soul Asylum, the renowned rock band from Minneapolis, is set to perform in Austin, Texas at Mohawk on October 17, 2024. The group has been a significant part of the rock scene since the ’80s, known for their energetic performances and diverse range of songs.

The band was initially called Loud Fast Rules and became prominent alongside other Minneapolis music icons such as The Replacements and Hüsker Dü. Their major-label debut came with the album “Hang Time” in 1988, followed by “And the Horse They Rode In On.” Soul Asylum gained commercial success with their 1992 album “Grave Dancers Union,” featuring hits like “Runaway Train,” which won a Grammy for Best Rock Song.

The band’s popularity continued with the release of their platinum-certified album “Let Your Dim Light Shine” in 1995. Their music has been featured in several compilations and soundtracks, including Kevin Smith’s films “Chasing Amy” and “Clerks.”

In 2005, Soul Asylum faced a setback when bassist Karl Mueller passed away due to cancer complications. Despite this loss, they released “The Silver Lining” in 2006, marking Mueller’s last contribution to their music.

Recently, Soul Asylum has maintained its presence on the music charts with their 2020 album “Hurry Up and Wait.” Frontman Dave Pirner also published a book titled “Loud, Fast, Words,” praised by American Songwriter magazine for its unique take on lyric books.

The band has reissued several earlier works and celebrated anniversaries with special releases like their legendary MTV Unplugged performance from 1993. A notable live show at State Theatre in Minneapolis marked their highest-grossing event ever.

Pirner reflects on his journey with optimism: “There’s a part of me that’s never gonna fit in, but I love being around people who love music… The future is bright.” He remains committed to creating music that resonates with audiences.
