On July 4, 2025, at around 8:51 a.m., the Austin Police Department (APD) responded to a collision involving a motor vehicle and a pedestrian on the 8300 block of South IH 35 Northbound Service Road. The vehicle involved in the incident left the scene. The pedestrian, identified as Jesus Rodriguez Barragan, was pronounced dead at the location.

The incident is being investigated as Austin’s 49th fatal crash of the year, with a total of 53 fatalities so far in 2025. In comparison, on this date in 2024, there were 40 fatal crashes resulting in 42 deaths.
