Austin-Bergstrom International Airport (AUS) has introduced a new public art installation titled “Convergence / Austin.” This project, part of the Art in Public Places (AIPP) initiative, was created by Beili Liu Studio, an Austin-based artist group. The installation process took place over five nights from September 22 to September 26, between 10 p.m. and 3 a.m., allowing travelers at AUS to witness its creation.
The artwork is designed to reflect the growth and diversity of AUS. According to Beili Liu, “The Austin-Bergstrom International Airport has been one of the fastest-growing airports in our nation,” which inspired the installation’s theme of community and energy. The piece measures 16 feet by 12 feet and is located across from Gate 15 in the main Barbara Jordan Terminal. It consists of about 400 vertical strands with 3,200 elements, designed to engage visitors with its detailed and immersive nature.
The installation also considers environmental factors, using materials that deter birds from perching while ensuring ease of maintenance. Funding for this project came from the airport’s 9-gate Terminal Expansion Program II. The AIPP program allocates 2% of eligible capital improvement budgets for commissioning or purchasing art for city-owned properties.
Projects like this are funded through airport-generated revenue, bonds, and Federal Aviation Administration grants rather than local taxpayer dollars. For more details on AUS’s art installations, visit their website: https://www.austintexas.gov/department/art-aus
