Austin Resource Recovery, in collaboration with the University of Texas (UT) Office of Sustainability and the UT Office of the Dean of Students, is organizing MoveOutATX from July 26 to 31. This annual event allows students to sustainably dispose of gently used items. Donation stations will be set up across West Campus, operating daily from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m., where students can drop off furniture, household items, small appliances, clothing, cleaning supplies, unopened food, and more.
The Free Furniture Market is also returning for its fourth year. Reuse organizations will transport donated furniture from the donation stations to the market at the UT Austin Whitaker Courts Parking Lot. Items will be available on a first-come, first-served basis from July 26 to 31 between 6:30 p.m. and 8 p.m. Participants must load and transport items themselves and sign a liability waiver. There is a limit of two pieces per person, with furniture sets considered as one item.
Community volunteers are needed for staffing the Free Furniture Market and can sign up at AustinTexas.gov/MoveOutATX. “MoveOutATX gives students an easy way to donate gently used items instead of sending them to the landfill,” said Richard McHale, director of Austin Resource Recovery. “It’s a win for zero waste and a boost for our local reuse economy.”
Donation station locations include Camino Flats at 2810 Salado St., Escala Condos at 1000 W 26th St., Lenox Condos near 2216 San Gabriel St., 26 West just south of 2620 Nueces St., and UT Whitaker Courts Parking Lot at 287 W 51st St.
Participating reuse organizations this year include Austin Area Urban League, Austin Creative Reuse, Goodwill Central Texas, Salvation Army Family Stores, UT Outpost, SAFE Alliance, Eco-Spot, IREP Junk Removal and Resale, JOSCO Products, and Arms of Hope.
