Oluchi Precious, a media consultant, has raised concerns about excessive legal solicitation following accidents. She emphasized the need for tort reform to mitigate lawsuit abuse and restore fairness in insurance and affordability. This statement was made on the social media platform X.

“injury law firms suffocated us with letters offering to sue our insurance company in case they didn’t want to replace the car or pay for any medical bills incurred,” said Precious. “In the US, lawyers are always waiting for companies to misbehave so they can sue them for good money. As soon you report a car accident, lawyers will start fishing and knocking on your door to hire them.”

Debates around tort reform in the United States are intensifying as policymakers argue that “lawsuit abuse” and runaway personal-injury claims are contributing to rising insurance premiums, hindering business investment, and burdening consumers. According to the Insurance Information Institute, “legal system abuse” is identified as the primary reason for soaring claims costs, particularly auto insurance claims, between 2013 and 2023.

In 2022, U.S. tort costs reached approximately $529 billion, equating to about $4,200 per household. These costs grew at an average rate of 7.1% annually between 2016 and 2022—outpacing inflation at 3.4% and GDP growth at 5.4%.

According to data from various states across the U.S., tort-system costs vary widely as a percentage of GDP. In 2022, some states such as Florida had costs near 3.35% of state GDP, while states like Alaska, North Dakota, and South Dakota were below 1.4%.
