On Oct. 21, the University of Texas (UT) faced off against the University of Houston (UH) in a highly anticipated road matchup. The game marked the first meeting between the ex-Southwest Conference (SWC) rivals since 2002.
While the Longhorns were expected to come out on top, the Cougars put up a strong fight, making it a hard-fought battle for UT. Unfortunately, the victory was overshadowed by the loss of their quarterback, Quinn Ewers, to injury. The final score stood at 31-24 in favor of the Longhorns.
UT started the game strong, imposing their will on the Cougars in the first half. With two touchdown passes from Ewers and a one-yard rushing touchdown by Savion Red, the Longhorns went into halftime with a comfortable 21-0 lead. However, their momentum seemed to stall after the break, and the Cougars took charge in the second half.
As reported by Austin NBC affiliate KXAN News, the Cougars managed to even the score with the Longhorns after the second half began. The game became a nail-biter as both teams fought to gain the upper hand. Ultimately, UT sealed the victory with a go-ahead touchdown in the final five minutes of the contest, as reported by Houston ABC station KTRK News.
Unfortunately, the win came at a cost for the Longhorns. Quarterback Quinn Ewers, who had been leading the team, was forced to leave the game due to a shoulder injury. According to Texas head coach Steve Sarkisian, Ewers finished the game with 211 passing yards on 23 completions out of 29 attempts, along with two touchdown passes. The loss of their field general put a damper on the otherwise hard-fought victory.
Following the game, the UT program expressed their satisfaction with the road win, stating, “Got it done on the road.” However, the focus now turns to Ewers’ injury and his availability for future games. The Longhorns, currently ranked No. 7 in The Associated Press (AP) college football poll, are set to host Brigham Young University (BYU) at home on Oct. 28.
