The Long Center for Performing Arts is continuing its free outdoor concert series, The Drop-In, every Thursday through August 14. The event takes place on the H-E-B Stage and features 23 bands over the summer. Attendees are encouraged to bring blankets and lawn chairs to enjoy live music.
This week’s lineup includes Geto Gala, a duo made up of Austin artists Deezie Brown and Jake Lloyd. Both musicians have established themselves in the local underground rap scene with their lyricism and stage presence.
Also performing is Blakchyl, a rapper known for her involvement in the hip hop community and collaborations with collectives, nonprofits, and filmmakers. She has toured Europe three times and opened for artists such as Talib Kweli, Snow Tha Product, Jean Grae, Bizzy Bone, and Scarface. Her new album “Better Than I Imagined,” produced by The Mask, was released in July along with a short film. Recently signed to Tru Thought Records in Brighton, UK, Blakchyl has also been featured on the cover of the Austin Chronicle and was nominated for Best Hip Hop Artist. She recently released an EP titled “Call Me Sometimes” and performed at Waterloo Records.
Blakchyl’s work has been described as “powerful and effervescent songs” by CultureMap.
Membership at the Long Center offers several benefits for The Drop-In events. Members receive early access to RSVP before the general public, early entrance to the venue with guests, access to a Member Lounge with free popcorn and reserved seating options, a members-only bar with weekly drink specials, additional surprises, and a complimentary Drop-In t-shirt for first-time members while supplies last.
Food trucks and a full bar will be available at each event; outside food or drinks are not permitted except for one sealed water bottle per attendee.
The Long Center recommends checking its social media channels every Friday for updates on upcoming performers.
