President Jay Hartzell of The University of Texas at Austin has announced the appointment of Justin Dyer as the inaugural dean of the School of Civic Leadership. Dyer, who has been serving as interim dean since the school’s launch, brings a wealth of experience to his new role.

In a statement, President Hartzell highlighted the importance of Dyer’s leadership, stating, “The School of Civic Leadership is building on UT’s longstanding tradition of educating future leaders in Texas and beyond.” He further emphasized Dyer’s expertise in American political thought and his ability to lead the school towards educating civic leaders capable of making a significant impact.

Expressing his enthusiasm for the new role, Dyer himself stated, “We have an opportunity to build something significant at UT. The School of Civic Leadership will introduce students to the founding principles and great debates of the American political tradition and prepare them for civic leadership in the 21st century.”

Sharon L. Wood, executive vice president and provost, commended Dyer’s past accomplishments, noting, “Through his work in the Civitas Institute and School of Civic Leadership, Justin has already established himself as a strong academic leader with an extraordinary ability to bring people together in the exchange of different ideas, perspectives, and experiences.”

Dyer, who has a background in political science and constitutional democracy, will lead the development of interdisciplinary programs at the School of Civic Leadership, aiming to prepare the next generation of America’s civic leaders. His appointment as dean is effective March 25, marking a significant step in the establishment of the University’s newest school.
