Westlake Head Football Coach Todd Dodge announced his retirement, stating that the 2021 football season will be his last at the Texas high school and that “It’s the right time.”

USA Today reported that Dodge, who is considered one of the most successful high school football coaches in Texas, announced his retirement in late July.

Dodge led the Chaparrals to a perfect 14-0 record and a Texas 6A Division 1 state championship in 2020.

“I’ve had the privilege of every Friday night of walking through that red archway and tapping the top of it, which says Ebbie Neptune Field,” Dodge said, reported by Austin American-Statesman. “That’s been a tremendous joy. We all have different bucket-list type of things we hope will happen, and being the head coach and athletic director at Westlake was one for me. (When) I had the opportunity, it was one of the greatest days of my life to come back to Westlake and be a part of this great tradition.”

A former Texas Longhorns quarterback, Dodge has compiled a 217-72 career record and helmed six state championship squads, AAS reported.

Before his departure, Dodge hopes to lead Westlake to one more championship.

“I’m ready to jump into the beautiful grind that is Texas high school football and see what we can do with this 2021 team,” Dodge said, reported by AAS. “There aren’t many chances to win back-to-back-to-back championships in the state’s highest classification. Is it an extra motivation to three-peat? Sure it is.”
