Pape-Dawson, a firm specializing in landscape architecture, is making strides in shaping communities in Central Texas. Their work emphasizes not just beautification but also resilience, livability, and community identity. The Deerbrooke community in Leander serves as a prime example of their approach to modern and sustainable neighborhood development.
Shawn Massock, Vice President of Planning & Landscape Architecture at Pape-Dawson, states: “As landscape architects, our goal is to create communities with a strong sense of place. The question we always come back to is, ‘Through our design, how can we improve quality of life in a memorable way?’”
The Deerbrooke project involved maintaining visual continuity and enhancing public spaces as part of Phase 2. The team integrated new planting and hardscape designs with the existing recreation center’s aesthetic while ensuring visual cohesion. Features such as the creekside limestone bridge demonstrate their philosophy by combining form and function.
Pape-Dawson also designed a park and trail system that links residents to parks throughout the neighborhood. This reflects their philosophy of connecting people with places through thoughtful design.
Massock explains the importance of resilient design: “These days, there’s a stronger focus on resilient design–strategically planning to reduce the impact of stormwater, flooding, wildfires, and strong winds.” He adds that it’s not just about building homes but creating an experience for residents: “It’s about the experience—what it looks like, how it feels to live there. That’s how we define success.”
In regions experiencing rapid growth like Texas, landscape architects play a crucial role in integrating housing and green infrastructure while respecting community character. Despite challenges such as federal funding cuts and evolving legislation, Pape-Dawson remains committed to balancing policy with people and place.
“Landscape architecture does more than beautify—it shapes how communities grow, connect, and thrive,” says Massock. At Deerbrooke, they aimed to make every space feel like home.
Pape-Dawson’s work reflects timeless values such as sustainability and connection while addressing modern challenges. As Austin continues to grow rapidly, projects like Deerbrooke showcase innovative landscape architecture that balances progress with place.
