As the 2024 election cycle progresses towards November 5, housing has become a prominent issue for both major political parties. The focus is on increasing supply and reducing regulatory barriers, key components of the National Association of Home Builders’ (NAHB) 10-point plan to address the housing affordability crisis.
NAHB has been actively participating in discussions at both the Republican and Democratic National Conventions. NAHB Chairman Carl Harris and First Vice Chairman Buddy Hughes attended these events, accompanied by NAHB staff, to emphasize the importance of housing in campaign agendas across party lines.
Their engagement included meetings with several key officials:
– Vice Presidential Candidate Tim Walz
– Majority Leader Steve Scalise
– Majority Whip Tom Emmer
– Democratic Whip Katherine Clark
– Kirsten Hillman, Canadian Ambassador to the U.S.
– Sen. Chris Coons (D-Del.)
– Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand (D-N.Y.)
– Rep. Gabe Amo (D-R.I.)
– Rep. Emanuel Cleaver (D-Mo.)
– Rep. Byron Donalds (R-Fla.)
– Rep. Ruben Gallego (D-Ariz.)
– Rep. Andrew Garbarino (R-N.Y.)
– Rep. Nick LaLota (R-N.Y.)
Additionally, NAHB participated in various events and roundtables such as the New Democratic Coalition Roundtable and POLITICO GOP and DNC Programming.
To further its advocacy efforts, NAHB has launched an Election 2024 section aimed at promoting housing as a critical issue in this election cycle. This initiative includes advocacy and public relations efforts, nationwide news coverage on housing’s significance to voters, information on promoting voting and understanding local housing policies, as well as NAHB’s congressional endorsements.
