On the night of July 1, 2025, Austin-Travis County Emergency Medical Services and Austin Police Department officers responded to a call at the Kerby Lane restaurant parking lot on South Lamar Boulevard. Upon arrival, they found Mark Barbosa, a Hispanic male born on February 8, 2002, lying on the ground. Despite efforts by emergency services, Barbosa was pronounced dead at 10:40 p.m.

Homicide detectives and crime scene specialists investigated the incident. It was determined that Barbosa had gone to the location to pick up his girlfriend. Jacob Turner, a 21-year-old white male, was also there with similar intentions along with a friend. An altercation between Turner and Barbosa led to Barbosa being physically assaulted by Turner, causing him to fall near a blue Nissan vehicle.

Turner left the scene with his friend and girlfriend in the Nissan. The medical examination concluded that Barbosa died from blunt force trauma, classifying the case as a homicide. Jacob Turner has been arrested and charged with first-degree murder and is currently held at Travis County Jail.

The Austin Police Department encourages anyone with information about this incident to reach out at 512-974-TIPS or anonymously through the Capital Area Crime Stoppers Program via their website or by calling 512-472-8477. This marks Austin’s 32nd homicide investigation for the year 2025.
