On Sunday, September 8, 2024, at approximately 5:55 p.m., Austin Police Department (APD) officers responded to a disturbance call in the 2500 block of Teri Road. The caller reported her husband was in a verbal and physical altercation with another male subject. The caller stated the male subject returned with a gun. Another 9-1-1 caller then stated that their uncle had been shot.

APD officers and Austin-Travis County Emergency Medical Services (A/TCEMS) arrived on scene and located a male subject, later identified as Steve Gonzalez, in the garage with an apparent gunshot wound. Mr. Gonzalez was pronounced deceased on scene at 6:34 p.m.

Homicide Detectives and Crime Scene Specialists responded to process the scene and interview witnesses. It was found that Mr. Gonzalez had been involved in an altercation with Martin Tovar, a subject known to Mr. Gonzalez. The two men had previously been throwing dice together and then walked outside of the residence. Mr. Tovar shot Mr. Gonzalez in the garage and then fled the scene. He was later located and arrested.

Mr. Tovar has been charged with First Degree Murder.
