Governor Greg Abbott and First Lady Cecilia Abbott hosted the 2023 Star of Texas Awards in Austin on September 11. The ceremony, held on the 22nd anniversary of the 9/11 terrorist attacks, aimed to honor peace officers, first responders, and firefighters. The event was attended by Texas Supreme Court Chief Justice Nathan Hecht, Texas Supreme Court Justices Jimmy Blacklock and Brett Busby, as well as elected officials and the families of first responders.

During the ceremony, Governor Abbott expressed his gratitude for the bravery and selflessness of first responders, stating that they answer to a higher calling. He emphasized that these individuals put themselves in harm’s way to protect those in need and represent the very best of society. The governor thanked all law enforcement officers, firefighters, and emergency first responders in attendance and across Texas.

Nineteen honorees were recognized with the Star of Texas Award during the event. This award, created in 2003 under House Bill (HB) 1937, acknowledges the exceptional courage, dedication, and commitment displayed by first responders. Additionally, the legislation proclaimed September 11 of each year as Texas First Responders Day, a day to remember and honor those who bravely serve the community.

As the anniversary of the September 11 attacks, the Star of Texas Awards hold significant meaning. They serve as a reminder of the tragic events that unfolded on that day in 2001 and the heroic actions of first responders who ran towards danger to help others. The ceremony not only recognizes the past but also celebrates the ongoing commitment and sacrifices made by first responders in Texas.
