DeMarvion Overshown is staying home to begin his National Football League (NFL) career.

The Arp native and now-former University of Texas (UT) Longhorns linebacker became the Dallas Cowboys’ lone third-round selection in the just-concluded draft on Friday.

The Cowboys, who finished last season with a National Football Conference (NFC) Divisional Round appearance, added the 22-year-old Overshown to what the team described as a “rather thin” linebacker corps.

Per a report on the team’s website, Overshown, an ex-safety, joins a group led by soon-to-be third-year veteran Micah Parsons and the re-signed Leighton Vander Esch.

Tyler CBS affiliate KYTX reported that he was at a draft party in the city of his birth when he received the call of a lifetime.

“It’s a feeling that I’ll never forget,” Overshown said, per KYTX. “People asked me all night what I was going to be like once my name got called. ‘Are you going to cry or yell?’”

“It happened so fast that I did all of it,” he continued. “It’s a feeling I’ll never forget. I’m going to cherish this moment forever.”

For his family and friends, it’s going to be an exciting two-hour, 20-minute drive to see him suit up for America’s Team.

According to KYTX, Overshown said in him, the Cowboys “are getting a versatile player” who can get comfortable anywhere he’s placed.

“A high motor guy,” he added. “A guy that’s going to make those plays that’s going to need to be made.”

In over 90 games with UT, Overshown, a two-time All-Big 12 selection, tallied 259 tackles, nine sacks and three interceptions, per the Sports Reference website.

Austin NBC affiliate KXAN reported that Overshown’s versatility would work well for Cowboys defensive coordinator Dan Quinn, who has a well-known tendency to deploy “Swiss Army knife” players on the gridiron.

It’s also likely the Cowboys may involve Overshown in pass coverage given his vast experience at the safety position, the station reported.
