The Board of Trustees convened on July 23 to discuss long-term budget planning and the potential for a Voter-Approved Tax Ratification Election (VATRE) aimed at investing in teachers and staff.

Superintendent Matias Segura emphasized the importance of considering every opportunity to reduce costs before requesting additional taxpayer funds. “These investments that we’ve made over time are there for a reason,” Segura said. “What we wanted to do was to bring them forward, acknowledge that there is going to be a process, we’re going to have conversations, none of these are proposals, none of these are recommendations, they’re none of those things.”

District leaders presented a comprehensive list of expenses not legally required for funding, indicating possible future cuts. The district plans to rely on a joint committee for insights and ideas on reducing the $78 million budget deficit over the next two years. This includes planning an additional $48 million cut from the budget regardless of whether voters approve the tax rate election.

Key upcoming dates include:
– Finalizing committee selection by July 31
– A Board Information Session and possible call for tax rate election on August 8
– Deadline for calling the tax rate election on August 19
