District Leadership and Education Austin have agreed on a compensation plan that includes market adjustments and a 25-cent per hour increase for classified employees. This represents an investment of approximately $17.8 million.

However, the permanent pay increases will only take effect if the board calls for and voters approve a potential VATRE (Voter-Approved Tax Ratification Election).

Despite making roughly $30 million in non-campus-based cuts, the district still faces a $59 million deficit. To increase teacher and staff salaries, additional funds are needed or deeper cuts that could impact classrooms must be considered.

Market adjustments for active, benefits-eligible staff aim to keep pay plans fair and competitive with other districts and the job market. These adjustments vary based on position and years of experience, so not all employees’ hourly rates will be adjusted. All classified staff will receive a minimum increase of 25 cents per hour.

Once the budget is approved, the compensation team will work with TASB to compare current compensation plans to those of other local districts and the external job market. Employees in positions deemed below market rate will receive pay increases.

If there is no infusion of funds through a VATRE, all active regular full-time employees will receive a one-time incentive payment of $500. Active regular part-time employees who are benefits-eligible will receive a one-time incentive payment of $250. These payments would be made on the mid-December paycheck, provided qualifying employees are in active status as of December 1, 2024. This reflects an investment of $5.5 million.

Key dates include:

June 6: Detailed information regarding market adjustments and their potential effects on employee groups will be presented to the board.
June 20: The board will vote on proposed compensation adjustments and possible VATRE recommendation.
November: The VATRE could potentially be on the ballot for voter approval.
December: Individual compensation letters detailing any approved market adjustments will be distributed during the first week of December. Any increases or incentive payments would appear on mid-December paychecks retroactive to their start date in 2024.

While navigating limited funds, district leadership remains committed to addressing long-standing inequities in compensation for classified staff and more experienced teachers.
