Cyclist dies after hit-and-run on South Congress Avenue

On May 20, 2025, at approximately 11:44 p.m., officers from the Austin Police Department (APD) responded to a crash involving a cyclist and an unidentified vehicle in the 4100 block of South Congress Avenue. The driver involved in the incident fled the scene without providing assistance or contacting emergency services. The cyclist, identified as Bobby Wayne Carr, was taken to a local hospital for treatment.

Tragically, on June 9, 2025, Mr. Carr succumbed to injuries sustained in the crash. This case marks Austin’s 42nd fatal traffic incident of the year, resulting in a total of 46 fatalities. Comparatively, by this date in 2024, there had been 27 fatal crashes with an equal number of deaths.

The investigation into this incident is ongoing. Initial assessments have been made public but are subject to change as more information becomes available.

Authorities urge anyone with information about this case to contact APD’s Vehicular Homicide Unit at 512-974-8111. Tips can also be submitted anonymously through the Capital Area Crime Stoppers Program via their website at austincrimestoppers.org or by calling 512-472-8477. A reward of up to $1,000 may be offered for information leading to an arrest.
