In the wake of a tragic bus accident in Bastrop County, the Austin Independent School District is emphasizing the importance of school bus safety. According to the Texas Department of Transportation, in 2022, seven people lost their lives and 51 were seriously injured in crashes involving Texas school buses.

One of the main factors contributing to these accidents was driver inattention and speed. In response to concerns about bus safety, the Austin ISD confirmed that all 551 of their buses are equipped with seatbelts, with 91 having lap belts and 460 having lap and shoulder straps.

Families and staff are urged to remind students about the critical importance of wearing their seatbelts at all times. Students are also advised to follow safety protocols when riding the bus, including arriving at the bus stop early, standing a safe distance away from the road, waiting for the bus to stop before boarding, and checking for oncoming cars before disembarking.

Drivers are reminded to maintain a safe distance from school buses, be vigilant for children around buses, and always stop for flashing red lights or a stop sign on a school bus, as failing to do so can result in a fine of up to $1,250 for a first offense.

In conclusion, the Austin ISD emphasizes that the safety of thousands of families who rely on school buses is a collective responsibility. The entire community is called upon to support efforts to ensure the safety of school bus routes.
