The City of Austin is seeking public input on three proposed designs for the future of Sixth Street, a well-known entertainment district in Austin. This nine-block area west of I-35 is home to numerous bars, clubs, and venues that are integral to the city’s music and entertainment scene.
The city aims to integrate Sixth Street more effectively into downtown Austin by improving mobility and safety through a long-term streetscape plan. The initiative builds on recommendations from the draft Austin Core Transportation Plan and involves collaboration with the Great Streets Program. This program focuses on enhancing downtown streets’ livability, safety, and aesthetics by creating “streets for people” with better pedestrian spaces.
Each design alternative for Sixth Street maintains its one-way westbound traffic flow but varies in how they handle bike/scooter lanes, pedestrian areas, and curb access. All designs aim to expand pedestrian space while accommodating vehicle traffic and providing curb access for various uses such as drop-offs, rideshare services, deliveries, valet parking, or other needs.
Residents can find more information about the project and participate in a survey at SpeakUpAustin.org/SixthStreet. For further inquiries, contact can be made via email at AustinMobility@austintexas.gov or by calling 512-974-2300.
