During the holiday season, waste in the United States increases by about 25 percent between Thanksgiving and New Year’s Day. Common sources of this additional waste include packaging materials, decorations, trees, and electronics. However, many of these items can be reused or recycled with proper sorting and disposal.
Cardboard boxes and plain wrapping paper should be placed in blue recycling carts. Materials such as Styrofoam, bubble wrap, and plastic films are not accepted in regular curbside recycling but can be taken to the Recycle & Reuse Drop-off Center for processing into new products. Ribbons and bows are not recyclable; residents are encouraged to reuse them for future gifts. To reduce packaging waste and vehicle emissions from online shopping, consolidating orders is recommended. Using reusable gift bags or newspaper as wrapping alternatives can also help minimize waste.
Holiday cards contribute to seasonal waste as well. Sending electronic cards is a paperless option that saves resources. Physical cards received during the holidays can be repurposed into gift tags or place settings.
Broken string lights should not be placed in household recycling bins because they can cause mechanical issues at recycling facilities. Instead, they should be brought to the Recycle & Reuse Drop-off Center.
When upgrading electronics during the holidays, it is important to dispose of old devices properly since many contain hazardous materials like lithium batteries and toxic chemicals. Austin residents have options such as on-demand bulk collection or drop-off at the Recycle & Reuse Drop-off Center for items including cell phones, microwaves, televisions, washers, and dryers.
For tree disposal after the holidays, artificial trees can be taken to the Recycle & Reuse Drop-off Center. Natural trees may be set out for curbside compost collection starting December 26 for eligible customers; others may bring their trees to Zilker Park on specific days. By following these guidelines for recycling and reuse during the holiday season, residents can help reduce waste and protect the environment.
