CapMetro has begun work on its Transit Plan 2035, which will serve as a guide for Central Texas’ transit network over the next five to ten years. The plan sets out recommendations to improve bus, rail, and Pickup services in the region. These recommendations are based on data analysis, coordination with stakeholders, and feedback from more than 8,000 community members who participated in a public survey last fall.
A significant part of the plan is Austin’s first Light Rail project. CapMetro states that “Not only is Austin’s first Light Rail an exciting new development for the transit system but data has also shown it will be an economic engine for the city and result in an overwhelmingly positive economic impact.”
In the initial five years before Light Rail service begins, CapMetro plans to focus on maintaining current services while making cost-effective changes aimed at increasing ridership. This includes updates to Rapid Routes 800 Pleasant Valley and 837 Expo Center. When Light Rail opens, attention will shift to future growth and adjustments to the bus network.
The final phase of Transit Plan 2035 looks beyond 2035 itself. Proposed changes for more than ten years into the future are expected to address regional transit system growth and any elements of Project Connect not included in earlier phases.
Community engagement remains a key aspect of CapMetro’s planning process. Residents are invited to attend open houses on August 26 (virtual) and August 28 (2910 E 5th Street Austin, TX 78702) to share their views with project staff and participate in transportation planning activities. Registration information can be found at capmetro.org/transitplan2035. Those unable to attend can provide feedback or sign up for updates through the same website.
Additional opportunities for community involvement are available through CapMetro’s Community Engagement team. More details about ongoing programs and ways to participate can be found at capmetro.org/community-engagement.
