CapMetro announced on Apr. 27 the opening of a new Bikeshare station at St. Edward’s University, marking the first such station on the university campus and one of the largest in its system.

The addition is part of CapMetro’s ongoing efforts to expand accessible and sustainable transportation options for residents and students in Austin and Central Texas, according to the agency’s expansion strategy. The Capital Metropolitan Transportation Authority covers this region with a focus on accessibility and inclusivity, as reported by its official website.

Art Jackson, CapMetro Vice President of Demand Response and Innovative Mobility, said, “Expanding our Bikeshare network is a key part of how we’re building a more connected and sustainable transportation system for our community. By adding stations in high-demand areas like St. Edward’s University, we’re making it easier for more people to choose active, affordable transportation options.”

Lisa Kirkpatrick, Vice President for Student Affairs and Administration at St. Edward’s University, said, “The addition of a Bikeshare station on our campus is an exciting step forward in expanding accessible, sustainable transportation options for our students, faculty and staff on the Hilltop. This partnership with CapMetro is an investment in student mobility and affordability, and it supports our commitment to environmental stewardship while helping Hilltoppers stay connected to the broader Austin community.”

The new station is located between Woodward Street and Moody Drive within the university parking lot. It reflects priorities such as increasing access in South Austin while strengthening connections to transit options near campus destinations.

CapMetro supports more than 31 million boardings each year according to its official website. The agency aims to empower and serve the region through responsible provision of high-quality public transportation services according to its official website. As part of its expansion plan—which seeks a robust network connecting people with jobs and key destinations—CapMetro plans to install 25 Electrified Bikeshare Stations by late 2026 that will include charging capabilities for e-bike batteries.

Other priorities include expanding service areas such as East Austin, South Congress, Manor, Mueller, West Austin; filling network gaps; enlarging current stations; co-locating bikeshare facilities with rail stations or bus stops; all designed under board-appointed oversight committees focusing on finance, audit administration operations planning safety as outlined by CapMetro.
