As the City of Austin and Travis County continue to see an influx of growth, a Travis County judge is putting mobility improvements high on the county’s list of priorities.

The Democratic judge hopes to enhance FM 969 stating that the roadway that stretches east from downtown Austin needs to be bigger, according to WFAA.

“(FM) 969 is one example of a road that heads east from downtown that needs to be widened and improved in many ways,” Travis County Judge Andy Brown said on Inside Texas Politics.

Currently, there is a project in the works to expand FM 969 to a four-lane arterial roadway with a center turn lane, paved shoulders and a sidewalk from FM 973 to Hunters Bend Road.

KXAN reported that during the Travis County Commissioner’s May 2021 meeting they discussed how to fund Phase II of the FM 969 project that is expected to cost $8 million.

WFAA reports that the county has seen a large incursion money for Cap Metro and transit infrastructure improvements with county expected to ask for more funding now that the infrastructure bill has passed.  

The Austin-Bergstrom International Airport is among the 3,075 airports in the nation expected get Bipartisan Infrastructure Law funding with a $17 million grant expected for the airport, according to KVUE.
