The Travis County Commissioners Court passed a resolution on Tuesday (May 3) to stretch paid parental leave for county employees to eight weeks, per Austin ABC affiliate KVUE.
County Judge Andy Brown took to Twitter to announce the approval of the measure.
“Our @TravisCountyTX commissioners court voted to expand paid parental leave for Travis County employees to [eight] weeks,” Brown, a Democrat, said in a tweet. “Delivering a pro-worker and family-friendly agenda is how we transform lives in our community.”
The station reported that under the resolution, the county will provide full-time employees with full compensation and benefits for up to eight weeks as they use their paid parental leave.
The resolution also calls for eligible employees and their supervisors to undergo training in relation to the policy, per KVUE.
According to the station, Brown and Travis County Precinct One Commissioner Jeff Travillion sponsored the resolution.
The leaders said that guaranteeing paid leave is key to prioritizing employees’ overall health and well-being, KVUE reported.
Earlier this year, the commissioners court approved a resolution to craft a paid family leave policy for all of Travis County’s workforce, the station reported.
The measure additionally tasked a subcommittee with developing recommendations for the policy, as well as present them to Brown and the commissioners within a 60-day window.
